Kevin slept late. Guinness did not get a walk today, because Grandma and Kevin watched another Shirley Temple movie this morning -- "Little Princess." Again, he loved it. I have not watched any S.T. movies in years. Strange how the two that I happen to own are so similar in plot and characters: S.T. with only one parent, loses that parent, a crotchety old man, a mean woman, a young couple who love her, and a wicked child. The plot of one is about replacing her parents, and the plot of the second is finding her "lost" Dad. The fact that she has only one parent in both movies is certainly a point of connection for Kevin!
We spent at least two one and a half hour sessions working on our whale puzzle. His concentration and ability still amaze me!
This afternoon, we went to a bookstore for "Winnie the Pooh," and also bought three more Magic Treehouse books for the price of two. Then we made a stop at the library for books on how flowers make seeds and seed dispersal since these have been discussion topics while gardening (pollination by insects) and dog walking (burdocks) this past week.
Kevin's late rising put our meals on a strange schedule. He hardly had any appetite either time. We didn't eat dinner until almost 9:00, and I thought he was never going to stop eating! We read the first chapter of Winnie, and he begged for more, but it was too late.

Ups and Downs
We did our normal routine of riding the bike and taking Guinness to doggie park. We found a shiny Canadian quarter on the sidewalk. A friend was there with his two little dogs today. While we chatted, I noted that Kevin was tossing his quarter in the grass, then finding it. I knew what was going to happen... I told him some other child would find it someday and be as thrilled as he had been.
We spent the rest of the morning beginning a 550 piece whale puzzle. This may take us days!!! But Kevin is amazingly good! He is obsessive/compulsive with puzzles and works for surprisingly long stretches before needing a break.
Kevin suggested a couple of days ago that we go to a "bounce house." Online I found an indoor play area in our city and promised to go there someday. Today was the day. Boring for grandmothers, but they do have WiFi! He began on a motorized motorcycle.
Also, they provide decent spaces for adults to hang out. One was a comfy sofa where I parked myself, put my head back, and dozed off! A mother awakened me to say that Kevin had pushed her daughter. Uh-oh! Kevin used to have such problems when playing with kids, but that seems to be in his past. But I have no idea what happened.
He had fun on this bounce slide until he and other children stood at the bottom as others continued down the slide. Then the supervisor of the play area told the children (including Kevin) to not stand at the bottom as they could get hurt. Kevin had a meltdown over that. He thought that rule was very unfair. Things were turning sour.
Then he was telling me that the other children would not let him play near them. The girl he had supposedly pushed was riding a motorcycle, so he wanted to ride again. She ran into him once, then he ran into her twice. Time to go! Fortunately, he gave me no grief as he declared he never wanted to go there again.
As promised, we stopped at my favorite chocolate store and he picked out three small candies to buy.
We went to our local beach on Lake Ontario for a swim, even though it was only in the 70s today. There is a nifty playground there that I knew he would enjoy. He found the water to be cold, but braved it anyway.
That is Kevin with the legs in the air!
I talked him out of the water, and we moved to the playground. There is a sign saying that children are to play only with adult supervision. It definitely is a challenging playground! A 13 year old was there with his Mom, and it was difficult for him as well.
Not sure how this came about, but the 13 year old allowed Kevin to put him in a swing intended for the handicapped! Kevin strapped him in and pushed him. LOL
Kevin went back to the lake with a little girl he met at the playground. They played in the water for a while, then went back to the playground. Kevin had a fall, but was not hurt. Grandma should have said, "Let's go," but didn't. Then he had a second fall -- maybe 4 or 5 feet on his back. That hurt! And continued to hurt. We had to hose off the sand outside, then I put him in the shower to get the rest off, before having his bath with jets massaging his back while our pizza baked. After eating, we sat in bed and watched a Shirley Temple movie, "Bright Eyes." He was fascinated by it! That movie has the song "On the Good Ship Lollipop" which he loved. We looked it up online to hear it again and learn more of the words.

Puzzle, Games, Sugar, and Nightmares
I was up with the birds to attend my Rotary meeting. Grampa was home, so could do the early morning babysitting. After returning, I wasn't feeling so well. After Grampa had left, I suggested Kevin watch some morning TV on my bed while I dozed off my stomach queasiness. Therefore, it was late morning before Guinness had his walk to doggie park and Kevin had his long bike ride.
A few days ago, Kevin asked that we bring a bag for picking up the garbage under a grove of spruce trees where there is a natural, private fort with much litter. We did that today. What a caring boy!
It was too late for our regular friends, but we met a new friend - Annie!
Kevin was eager to get back at the Wonder Woman puzzle and had found two pieces before I joined him at the table. He has always made up songs - tunes and lyrics. While he has been with me this time, I have tried to capture some of his words from a distance, but they usually elude me. As I was reading email and he was working on the puzzle in the dining room, I heard him singing the phrase, "Praise the Lord" three times along with other indistinguishable words.
It is a fairly difficult puzzle, but we conquered it!
When I pulled the puzzles out of the attic yesterday, I also brought down some games -- Go Fish and Flinch. We played Go Fish with good success since he won two games fairly and squarely. ;-)
Then I opened the Flinch cards and nearly had a meltdown myself. I didn't realize it was my mother's box of cards!!! She loved that game! The score cards for playing with a friend at her assisted living home were in the box. Kevin did not understand why Grandma had become so emotional.
I thought the game would reinforce some counting for him, but the backwards counting was a challenge. Since I could not remember the rules to the game or what determined a win, it was a moot point game with no tears.
This evening, neighbors hosted a shower to celebrate the upcoming marriage of a couple in our development -- Ellen and Larry. (Ellen is the "mother" of Lucy, the other chocolate lab who lives here.)
Kevin joined me at the party. He was very well behaved and a little charmer.
I didn't want any stray marks from crayons or markers to remain on furniture at the Blacks, so I only took a sticker book for him to work on. I understand that he did ask Mrs. Black for some crayons, but she graciously told him she had none.
Time was running late, and I knew we were pushing it as the desserts came out. On the tray were Nanaimo Bars.
They ended the evening! Strange what a dose of sugar can do to a child! He was suddenly running off up their stairs while I was demanding his return to no avail; he hid under the coffee table, then chair.
If you are not familiar with this Canadian staple, look up the recipe. They are beyond sweet!!!
Upon arriving home, we took Guinny out for his final potty break. Kevin noted a garter snake on our patio. I ran for the camera! :)
Earlier today, we saw a Praying Mantis on the wall of the house while doing some weeding in the garden. Kevin is a wonderful helper!
While getting Kevin ready for bed, Guinness was running around with a plastic bag in his mouth, teasing me to take it from him while trying his best to keep it away from me. I didn't think much of it, though I wondered where he found it. After Kevin was in bed and I returned to the kitchen, this is what greeted me:
I don't know if the cupboard door was left ajar, or if he has learned to open it. Dear, God, No! In trying to remember what was in the organic bin, there were banana peels, cherry seeds and stems, watermelon and cantaloupe rinds, also corn cobs! Not a smidgen of any of that left! Guinness is sleeping in his crate tonight...
Several minutes after putting Kevin to bed, he came looking for me in tears. He insisted that I must lie down with him as he was scared. He said he was afraid of monsters under the bed. As we talked, he told me that he has bad dreams "a lot." I encouraged him to tell me about his dreams. He refused saying that it would make him cry. He asked why we have bad dreams. I used the lame (or factual?) answer of our brains working through the many problems we have. I told him that everyone has problems and everyone has bad dreams. Apparently, there is blood in some of his dreams. He also wanted to know why there are so many bad movies with blood in them. I have no answer for that except that grownup men like those movies.
I asked if he dreams of Mommy. He does not. I told him of my dreams about her - that they used to be nightmares until I had a vision of being with her, hugging her, and she assured me she was just fine. Now she is a part of my pleasant dreams - like a character in a play.
He had spoken earlier about his itchiness, wondering why he has it. I contemplated when he will be old enough to tell him about the issues he has had to deal with as a result of being in an orphanage for 15 months, and how it tore his Mommy's heart apart that he had to wait so long before he was in his parents' loving arms. But that is not my place, nor do I know enough about his problems to explain them - such as his sensory issue.
An hour later, I awakened finding him fast asleep - hopefully for a good, long night.

Vet, Puzzles, and Game
Kevin found some balloons in a desk drawer today. He was pleased to learn that he can blow up a balloon!
Guinness had a vet appointment today for his annual shots. I booked it for the first appointment after lunch, so we were the only ones in the waiting room! He still was crazy, but less so without other dogs and owners to capture his attention.
The boy and dog kept each other entertained while waiting for the vet. The boy allowed the dog to go through the swinging door to the inner sanctum twice. Why do they have a swinging door there anyway? What are they thinking?
The vet said he can hardly believe that five years have gone by since Guinness was first in that office! He has gained a pound (now 78.8 lbs.) since he was there two months ago for a Heartworm test and medication.
We called Daddy today. You can see the elation on his face!
Grandma checked the attic for more activities and returned with a couple of games and puzzles which belonged to his mother. We started with the puzzles with the least amount of pieces. The Hook portrait of the head of Christ was a bit of a challenge, but Kevin dealt with it handily.
By evening, we started Karin's Wonder Woman puzzle. I did the frame, and he did most of the figure himself! I am sure that his mother never did either of these puzzles at age 6!
Games are not Kevin's forte. He does not understand the concept of winning AND losing. If he is not winning, he will blatantly cheat to be the winner. I am not sure how to help him with this issue. Perhaps if he is ever able to play a team sport, he will learn the object is not to be the perpetual winner, but to learn to be a good sport. Meanwhile, games are a very touchy subject! Mommy bought LOTS of games for him - many of them did not have a "winner," so they were fun for him.
We didn't try the games today, but Kevin mentioned he and his Daddy like to play golf. Oh?! News to me. So, I asked if he would like to try to learn to play croquet. I hoped that learning to control the ball would not broach the problem of winning and losing. I got out only two hoops and set them in the yard, then proceeded to show him how to hit the ball. He preferred to hit it in the style of playing golf which gives you no control for this game. Of course, he had no success, so tears ensued, yet he did not want to quit playing. I tried to explain that games are "fun," and, if he is going to cry, it is not fun. If he cannot try to play the game as Grandma instructs, then he will not be able to be successful and will be miserable. I finally convinced him that we needed to put the game away as he was destroying the hoops.

Splash Park, Hose, and Bubbles
Kevin riding to doggie park this morning.
We took Guinny to doggie park at the normal time today, and his friend Holly was there; then Dee (a tiny white dog with a Napoleon complex)came along. After they left, two more labs we had never met came along. But it was already so hot that the dogs were really dragging and not interested in playtime.
We brought an extra bag, because Kevin wanted to clean up the trash that had been strewn under the large spruce trees. What a civic-minded child!
After lunch, we went to the lakeside park down the street where there is a playground and splash park. It was in rest mode when we arrived and the children were lying in the drying puddles on the concrete. We were only there a couple of minutes before it came to life the children went into crazy mode! Kevin is in the center of these shots.
Kevin sitting on a jet of water.
Kevin got a kick out of playing with a couple of girls (not pictured). It started with the younger girl tagging him. Then he grabbed a glass of water out of the older sister's hands. She retrieved it, refilled it, and dumped it on his head. They had a lot of fun being silly.
Kevin had fun figuring out the physics of changing the velocity and direction of the squirting water.
Our parking ticket was only good for 1.5 hours. When our time was up, Kevin was not happy about leaving. I told him that we won't be able to come back if he will not leave when it is time. He came begrudgingly. I wanted to stop at the corner store for a newspaper to see the article about coyotes in the area a doggie park friend spoke of this morning. It was such a hot day that I told Kevin to stay in the car and left it running while I ran inside. (shhhh....) When I returned 60 seconds later, he said that he had fallen asleep! Aha! So the tears were not so much about disappointment as they were about being exhausted!
While I prepared our dinner, Kevin watered my flower beds with the hose. After dinner, I fertilized all my plants.
We were cuddling this evening, and I said, "There is no one to take our picture! Maybe we should take one ourselves." So he ran for my camera, and this was the best we could do.
I plunked him in our spa tub with a bit of bubbles and turned on the jets. A while later, he was screaming to me. I arrived on the scene to find that the jets were making an overabundance of bubbles. He was about to drown in his bubbles! Grandma rescued him.

Rocks, Baths, and Balls
This morning, Kevin rode his bike to doggie park. It was a great success! Except... there were no dogs there to play with. We were later than the normal playtime. Though we did run into one of Guinness’s elderly friends as we left, and Kevin couldn’t stop petting gentle Ben.
We saw painted rocks at Chautauqua, and I told Kevin that he could do that at my house. I couldn't put it off another day. He asked constantly when he could paint rocks. He was very careful about not making a mess and made some lovely creations.
Then he "planted" them in my garden.
After finishing the rocks, I suggested that Kevin play in the sprinkler. He liked that idea!
Kevin managed to get Guinness all wet too, so we gave him a bath with the hose. He needed it anyway. After he was dry, we combed out his loose hairs. Kevin is becoming proficient at being my assistant in this process! Then Kevin said that I never take pictures of Guinny, so we took some.
Kevin tried climbing this tree.
For dinner, we ate on the patio of the G&C Club down the street watching the vehicles on the bridge, the Canada Geese, and the boats on the bay. We counted 67 geese!!
Guinness doesn't know he is a Retriever. He does reverse retrieves (steals things and makes you chase him). Tonight Lucy, also a chocolate lab, was out with her daddy playing fetch. Lucy is very serious about fetch. Kevin tried throwing the ball for Lucy also, using the plastic throw "arm." Kevin knew we had one in our garage, so, when we came home he got it out and tried to play fetch with Guinness. Guinness RETRIEVED the ball MANY times!!!! He must like playing with Kevin better than with me.
