The Helping Hand

Our church's VBS, called SonSurf Beach Bash, is mornings this week. It is a 35 minute ride to our church. Kevin ate a quick breakfast at home, then took some BabyBel cheese to eat in the car and created this masterpiece out of the waxy cover. He is the consumate artist!

Kevin was very shy at the beginning. He refused to sit in his row at first.

He wanted me to stay, so I sat in the back for a while. The counselors were great and took him under their wings to make him feel welcome. It amazes me that he is so shy in this type of situation, even when he knows some of the kids as in their former church when Mommy was alive. Yet, it other situations, such as on a playground, he is very outgoing and the person in charge!

When I returned at the end of the morning, this is what I saw on the cemetery fence behind the church! The craft today was to make a camp tie-dye shirt. Their snack was "oysters!" They were made with two oval cookies which the kids frosted top and bottom, and added yogurt covered raisins for the pearls on one cookie and put the second cookie on top! On top of the cookie, they put 2 dots of frosting and placed chocolate chips on each dot for the eyes. This goes with the Beach Bash theme.

After lunch, we ran three errands: went to the library to turn in his first two installments of reading. After three books, you receive a poster and stickers; after three more, you fill out a ballot for a chance to win bigger prizes. He had read six books. And we looked for more books and videos.

Then we went to the carwash. At the end, three men were inside the car wiping the inside while other men wiped the exterior dry. Before I realized what had happened, I saw KEVIN in the backseat wiping down the upholstery!!! The men thought it was very cute that Kevin was so eager to help.

Our last stop was the grocery store, then home to some backyard water fun.
The yellow bucket is his the "totebag" given to each of the kids at VBS. He brings home his crafts and papers in the bucket and is to take it back each day. Clever! To go with their Beach Bash theme, of course!

After dinner on the deck, our neighbor was watering the flowers among the boulders beside the driveway. The next time I looked, this is what I saw!!! :-0 Very kind of Mr. Whitehead to accommodate a little boy!
